The COVID-19 crisis has brought about unprecedented health and safety challenges for businesses. Both employers and employees have responsibilities to maintain a health workplace for themselves and customers.
Latest Update - January 7th, 2021: The November 19th, 2020 Provincial Health Officer (PHO) order to suspend all events and social gatherings has been extended to February 5th, 2021 at midnight.
Latest Update - December 3rd, 2020: The Provincial Health Officer has issued a new order detailing restrictions for indoor physical activities, indoor sports and outdoor sports.
- Review the latest B.C.-wide restrictions on social gatherings, events, travel, masks, and sports and physical activities
- Review the PHO order - gatherings and events
This follows another public health order from November 19th, 2020 to help reduce social interactions and travel.
Masks are now required for everyone in all public indoor settings and workplaces. Children under the age of 12 and people who cannot wear a mask or who cannot put on or remove a mask on their own are exempt. Read the mask mandate order.
- Employers are expected to enforce the mandatory mask policy with both employees and customers
- A customer can be refused entry or service if they do not wear a mask
Individuals are subject to a $230 fine if they:
- Do not wear a mask in an indoor public setting
- Refuse to comply with the direction of an enforcement officer, including the direction to leave the space
- Respond with abusive or belligerent behaviour
In addition to compliance activities by WorkSafe, an Environmental Health Officers team will focus on workplaces in the Vancouver Coastal and Fraser Health regions to ensure COVID-19 Safety Plan compliance and enable rapid response and action.
The order restricts most formal in-person meetings outside the workplace. Events and social gatherings, including business meetings in restaurants or other venues, should be restricted to your household or core bubble at this time. See restrictions around events and social gatherings.

- Workplace Safety - December 16, 2020
